Assessment feedback can have an emotional impact on students. This research contributes to the existing body of literature students’ reactions assessment through investigating negative responses summative experienced by first-year students at two UK universities. The majority learners interviewed indicated that their initial had a and demotivated them. For some these emotions were very serious led them consider leaving university. Negative related both written provided, grade received, student’s expectations about both. Potential solutions mitigate are provided.
